What is Calisthenics

What is Calisthenics?

Calisthenics is an artistic sport that combines dancing, gymnastics, ballet and apparatus work.  It promotes great team involvement in a fun team-orientated environment.  The word calisthenics comes from the Greek words “kallos” for beauty and “thenos” for strength.  At Rosemore, calisthenics
embodies this by celebrating the beauty found in the strength of our participants through dance and performance.

Calisthenics is truly a unique Australian dance sport which involves a team of participants learning routines choreographed to music and presenting these routines on stage at competitions and concerts. Pupils learn between five and six routines throughout the year.  In addition, participants can also compete in solo and duo items as well as have the opportunity to represent the State in the National Titles.

Why do Calisthenics?

  • It is a one-stop shop for performers as routines use elements from ballet, jazz, acting, singing, acrobatics, marching, hip-hop, contemporary
    and even folk dance.
  • Participants develop strength, grace, flexibility, agility and coordination in a fun environment.
  • Training exercises both sides of the brain, develops good temporal and spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination – this helps participants perform well in other sports.
  • Participants develop confidence, discipline, resilience and perseverance - soft-skills that would help them in life.
  • Participants learn about leadership and teamwork – the magic happens as a team
